Thullatha Manamum Thullum (1999) - Tamil Movie

The hero Kutty (Vijay) returns to Chennai after serving a prison term of seven years in Pune (extra make- up to make him look aged would have been welcome here. He looks so fresh for one who had served a long term) and sings a stanza from his favourite song (it fits badly here because of the blaring sound made by the passengers who soon settle down to hear his story). Kutty longs to become a singer while working in an audio shop run by Mani (Manivannan).

His songs are appreciated by a college student Rukmani (Simran) and each time she wishes to meet him, circumstances project him as a bad element. He also becomes the cause for Rukmani losing her vision and repents for it. He regularly writes to his mother about the developments (right through the film the mother never makes an appearance) and she offers her eyes to Rukmani after her death by which time Kutty befriends her. To meet the cost of the eye transplant, he offers his kidney to a Pune-based richman. While returning home he inadvertently becomes an accomplice in carrying explosives and is sent to jail. (He could have easily established his identity by various means but avoids them, the reasons being known to the director).
Having regained her vision, Rukmani, who had studied for IAS, becomes a Collector and when Kutty tries to contact her, he is still the rowdy element in her mind. The climax reunion is stretched more than it warrants.
A couple of turning points have been effectively brought out by well thought out situations and they blend with the narration, the director taking the credit, particularly the scenes to create doubts in the mind of the heroine about the hero, and the guilty conscious hero showing hesitancy while trying to help her without revealing his identity.
